Workflow

Learn the Fundamentals

What should I practise, in what order?

Beatmatching, phrasing, EQ and gain staging in that order. Everything else is decoration on top.

beginnerfundamentalspractice

The path

  1. Beatmatch
  2. Phrasing
  3. EQ
  4. Gain staging
  5. Transitions

Step by step

How to run it

  1. Beatmatch by ear with sync off

Ten minutes a session. It stops being hard after a few weeks.

  2. Count phrases

Most club music moves in 8, 16 and 32 bars. Mix on the phrase, not just the beat.

  3. Learn subtractive EQ

Cut the incoming bass, do not boost anything.

  4. Fix gain staging

Trim so every track hits the same level; stop riding the master.

  5. Record yourself and listen back

Painful, and the fastest feedback loop available.
